I love aerial photographs and I and I've just come across a nice page here that was shared on Richard Byrne's blog. I couldn't help thinking that it would be a good selection of pictures to discuss. There is a quiz element in that you are supposed to guess from a choice of three places where the photos have been taken. However, I think there could also be a whole load of discussion over what can be seen in the pictures as well.
Cádiz lends itself so well to them. I used an aerial photo of the old-town as a springboard for a class last year. We projected the image on the board and then everyone came up and took it in turns to identify key places: the school, a favourite bar, square, landmarks etc. There was some disagreement and a lot of chat. In the next lesson one of the students had found an aerial view of Venice (very similar to an aerial view of Cádiz in fact!). He'd been there on holiday a few weeks before and he talked us through everything he'd done using the map to guide himself and us. We ended up talking about rip off gondolier rides which extended into a great discussion on bargaining and tourist vs local prices.
Thanks for reminding me about the power of aerial images :)

Hi, Richard,
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite books to use with my students is The Earth from the Air for Children: Children's Edition [Hardcover]. Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Thanks for reminding me to get it off the shelf!

Ceri - I've been meaning to buy an aerial photo of Cadiz for the wall in our living room, it's looks great from above!
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie, I love Yann Arthus-Bertand too! I think that would be my ideal profession: flying around taking photos of stuff. Brilliant!
